Are electrical enclosures suitable for switchboard arrangements?
Electrical enclosures are suitable for switchboard arrangements, and our GTi ISO switchgear range is designed for them. A switchboard enclosure must protect the equipment it houses and protect users from direct and indirect electric shock. Our socket housing units are rated IP44, protecting against solid objects 1 mm in diameter and water splashes, while our empty housings are rated IP65, preventing dust intrusion and ingress from water jets. All GTi ISO insulated distribution boxes offer Class II IEC protection, and all our switchgear protects against impact to IK08.

Can you divide a junction box to separate different voltages or circuits?
You can divide a junction box or electrical enclosure into separate functional zones using partitions or divider panels, which keeps equipment on different voltages, circuits or current sources apart. To get it right, specify both the box and the partition walls correctly: size the enclosure and the dividers around the equipment and the room available, choose materials suited to the application, and check whether the dividers need a special capability such as pre-embossing for cable bushings. We supply a wide range of plastic partition walls and holders that divide enclosures lengthwise or crosswise.

Can you keep different voltages or circuits separate inside a junction box?
Equipment using different nominal voltages can be kept separate inside a junction box, and doing so is vital for safe operation. Two things need specifying: the enclosure itself and the partition walls. Size them around the equipment and the space available, choose materials to suit indoor or outdoor use and the ingress protection required, and check whether the dividers need extras such as pre-embossing for cable bushings. Effective separation also avoids electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can cause signal disruption and hardware damage. In the UK, BS7671 Wiring Regulations require the presence of different voltages and where they can be isolated to be identified.

Can you add a partition wall to an electrical enclosure?
Partition walls can be added to an electrical enclosure to divide the space into separate functional zones or to give particular circuits additional insulation. They also add flexibility, as they can be moved or fully removed when an application is modified or upgraded. When specifying one, make sure it fits within the enclosure and is made of materials suited to the intended application, and check whether it needs a special function such as pre-embossing for cable bushings. We offer partition walls with holders for our AK, GEOS and TK series.

What should you look for in a switchboard enclosure?
A switchboard enclosure has a dual function: as well as protecting the electrical equipment within, it must protect users from direct or indirect electric shock. It should therefore prevent the ingress of dust and water through a suitable ingress protection (IP) rating, offer suitable IK protection against impacts, and meet IEC Protection Class II standards. A modular setup that supports interconnectivity is also a common requirement, as it segregates the architecture and accommodates rapid expansion. We recommend our GTi ISO series of distribution boxes for low voltage switchgear, made from robust polycarbonate with interconnected housings that assemble quickly.

Can electrical enclosures be fitted with terminals, DIN rails and cable glands?
Our enclosures can be fitted with terminals, DIN rails and cable glands. We offer an extensive range designed specifically to accommodate them via pre-punched or pre-drilled holes, which maintain each enclosure's ingress protection rating while allowing maximum flexibility of use. Where an off-the-shelf enclosure is not a perfect fit, our CNC machining capabilities let any product in the range be modified to take terminals, rails or glands.

Which enclosure should you choose for mounting a PCB?
For mounting a PCB, we recommend an enclosure from our TK range in polycarbonate (PC) or polystyrene (PS), used with our TK MLH-55/75 or TK DST accessories. These allow a board to be installed without drilling holes, so the structural integrity of both the PCB and the enclosure is maintained. TK enclosures come in multiple sizes, are fully customisable, and offer optimum UV protection and resistance to elevated temperatures, ingress protection up to IP66 against dust and water, and IK07/IK08 protection against external mechanical stresses. A transparent lid is available so a PCB display can be read without opening the enclosure.

How can you future-proof an electrical installation without oversizing the distribution box?
To future-proof an electrical installation without specifying an oversized distribution box, use modular, interconnecting enclosures. Our GTi series of distribution boxes has open sides, so several GTi enclosures can be assembled together and the installation can grow later without affecting the IP65 rating or needing side walls knocked out manually. That means you can specify an enclosure at the exact size your current needs demand, optimising space utilisation, and still accommodate expansions or other modifications to the switchgear later on.

Which enclosures suit switchboard arrangements, and what options make installation easier?
Our enclosures can accommodate switchboard and busbar arrangements, providing secure, adaptable housing for fuse enclosures, circuit breakers, lightning protection and other electrical components, including photovoltaic equipment. For modular switchboard setups we recommend our GTi enclosure range, which is designed to be combined and expanded and provides secure, weather-resistant housing that can be configured to fit different switchboard layouts. To make installation easier, we can customise enclosures with cut-outs, pre-installed terminals or complete assembly, and we offer laser engraving and printing for clear labelling.

How do enclosures provide double insulation and basic protection for users?
Electrical enclosures provide double (Class II) insulation, acting as a secondary layer of protection where the primary insulation on the wiring has been removed or compromised in order to make connections. This matters most for live components carrying AC voltages over 50 V or DC voltages over 120 V. All of our enclosures also carry a minimum of IP2X protection, which prevents direct contact with live parts and blocks the ingress of solid objects, and higher IP ratings are available to suit the application. Together these measures maintain basic protection for installers and end users in everything from residential to industrial settings.

Which enclosures can be fitted with terminals, DIN rails and cable glands?
Not every enclosure we offer comes with pre-fitted terminals, DIN rails or cable glands, but most of our enclosures are designed to support them, either as standard options or through our customisation services. Many come with integrated mounting options or accessories for the simple installation of terminals and DIN rails, and where cable glands are needed we offer a wide range of compatible enclosure types that can be delivered pre-punched for cable entries. We can also supply enclosures pre-fitted with terminals, rails and glands through our in-house customisation service.

Can all of your enclosures be fitted with terminals, DIN rails and glands?
Most Spelsberg enclosures can be fitted with terminals, DIN rails and cable glands via pre-punched or pre-drilled entry points, without affecting the enclosure's IP rating. Where a standard design doesn't cover a specific application, custom drilling and fitting configurations are available through Spelsberg's in-house CNC manufacturing.

Could you advise the most reliable method for mounting a PCB within enclosures please?
Spelsberg's PCB mounting kit is the recommended method for mounting a PCB inside an enclosure, keeping cable glands clear of the board to prevent fouling. It's available in two variants — TK MLH-55/75 for smaller PCBs and TK DST for larger boards — fitted to the TK range of polycarbonate and polystyrene enclosures.
