Why are enclosures made with halogen-free materials?

Halogens — fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine — can release toxic gases when they burn. Excluding them from core enclosure materials supports compliance with safety standards such as DIN VDE 0100-718 and improves protection in the event of a fire.

This matters most in public spaces, escape routes, and other regulated areas: halogen-free materials cut down on toxic gas and smoke during a fire, which supports air quality and safer evacuation, while also reducing the corrosive gases that can damage nearby electronics or structural elements. Fire-resistant ranges built with halogen-free materials can be tested to standards like DIN 4102 part 12 and certified against VDE and ULEU requirements, in some cases providing up to 90 minutes of fire protection.
